Earth’s Crust

Have you heard of Mesosaurus or Cynognathus? You’ll meet them in this lesson. Their fossils helped scientists piece together the world’s biggest puzzle: Earth’s crust. You’ll see what scientists noticed about the clues these creatures left behind. You’ll also try to build the continental puzzle yourself to see how the pieces could fit together.

Along the way, you’ll explore what Earth’s crust is made of. You’ll learn about the two types of crust and use a model to learn about the rocks they’re made of. Learning about those rocks will help you understand why the ground is always moving.

What you’ll learn:

  • There are two types of crust: continental and oceanic
  • Continental crust is granitic (less dense) and oceanic crust is basaltic (denser)
  • The crust is broken into pieces called tectonic plates.
  • Tectonic plates move.
